Our Story...

Shri Devi Mahalaxmi Shirsaikarin Devasthan, Dhargal, Pernem, Goa..

The village Shirsai was a part of Vijaaynagar Empire which was conquered by Bhahamani Sultan prior to Portuguese. Portuguese Landed in Goa in the year 1510 and within a short span of time took control of total Goa. In 1526 , they took reins of Gramsaunsthas and passed codification in the Foral of Afanso Mexia. Gramausthas converted to communidade. Today we are the descendent of our ancestors bearing Surname Parab and belonging to Kharvi community.

Our Ancestors, bearing surname as “PARAB”and of to Kshatriyas Marathas Kharvi or Tarukar community had settled in the village Shirsai.Probably These people’s hard work or labour may have converted it as residential colony. It is quiet common that when a small fraction of group comes together they construct a temple for their eternal faith and moral support. These people had constructed a temple of Shri devi Mahalaxmi Shirsaikarin in the form of Shri devi Mahishasur Mardini. It got accompanied with additional daities as Shri devi Gajyant Laxmi, .Shri devi Santeri, Shri dev Somnath Shri dev Nirakar with Shri dev Vetal and Sri Dev Betal. These had given a status of Panchayatan. As more and more of the area came under the habiat number of shrines also must have increased.

Everything was going smoothly and suddenly Portuguese who had come here in the search of spice trade joined hands with missionaries, On 8 th, March 1546 King John III of Portugal passed an ordinance which banned Hinduism in Portugal and its colonies spread all over the world. In the pursuit of abolishing Hinduism from the land they banned all the customs and rituals practiced by the people. They even banned weddings procession.rituals in the temples were stopped. Later In the year1546 Francis Xavier proposed the establishment of the Goan inquisition in a letter addressed to the King Joao III of Portugal. With the approval from the king ,In the year 1560 the inquisition commenced on the larger scale with the destructions of 300 temples of Hindu god and goddesses from South Goa crushed with the support of missionaries and army. And in a very short span of time they started their destructive movement in north Goa. all temples were crushed to the grounds , the black god as they used to refer our daities were disfigured. Hindu people who objected were either burned alive or tortured along with their families

Between the Inquisition's beginning on larger scale in 1561 and its temporary abolition in 1774, around 16,000 persons were charged ,a big .number of people killed In order to hide their records of brutality, the Portuguese Govt. and Goa’s Inquisition office destroyed or burned records before 1812 .In 1812 the Inquisition was abolished . It is therefore impossible to know the exact number of those put on trial and the punishments that they were given.[2] The few records that have survived suggest that at least 57 were executed for religious crimes, and another 64 were burned in effigy because they had already died in jail before sentencing Somewhere around 1536 during the beginnings of time of inquisition Portuguese rulers in collaboration with missionaries started demolishing hindu places of worship like temples, shrines and deities. Thousands of people got killed for their refusal for conversion. When this move was in full swing in south Goa Devotees of .Temples from North Goa started fleeing with their temple daities hiding in the bullock cart or taken in the canoes for the asylum .in nearby kingdom. Our ancestors also showed courage to shift from Shirsai To Rane”s Juve –the first Halt and later to the Chichule Tar.at Dhargal At Chichule Tar the pimpal Tree on the shores of river still existing sharing the same shade that it gave to our Shri Jagadambha and her Panchayatan for number of days .

His Highness king of Sawantwadi Shri Rao Raje Khem Raje I Sawant Bhosle donated a piece of land known as “SIDDHI CHE TEM: it was having area of nearly 500 guntas – Our ancestors constructed a small house type temple with a Garbhagriha and adjoining Anthral and Mandap ,every thing compact. For ventilation and light a special type of artistically crafted holes were provided Inferences Looking at above all facts we can say that our stone idols of daities are older than 1510, Since 1510 Hindu’s were helpless in their own land. Some of the temple daities ,that we worship even today and have collected in later stages bears scar marks on the stone similar to the way they have disfigured most of the temple daities throughout in Goa The temples well and tali that is lake at Shirsai might give still more clues of the destruction if cleaned and excavated scientifically..
